Policy Information

First-year students, including those with enough credits to be classified as sophomores living in any form of campus housing are prohibited from bringing vehicles to campus during their first year (FSSP, fall through spring quarters). These resident students are not eligible to purchase any campus parking ePermits, including daily, weekly, or quarterly permits without an approved resident exception.  Residents are expected to walk, bike or utilize public transportation to travel to and from campus and the surrounding area.

Residents who feel they have extenuating circumstances that warrant an exception to the Resident Parking Policy may submit an application to Transportation & Parking Services (TPS). Reasons such as the distance one lives from home, inconvenient work/class obligations, vehicle ownership or lack of other storage options, social activities, etc. will not be considered a valid basis for an exception.

TPS reserves the right to deny or authorize requests based on parking availability, and exceptions will be granted only if there is a legitimate, documented need that public transportation or alternative options cannot accommodate.  Students applying for an exception who have a valid CA DMV issued ADA Placard must include a copy of the Placard and the Placard Registration documentation along with the application.  In addition, students must provide a copy of the vehicle's current DMV registration (registration must be in your or your family's name).

Students who are granted an exception will be approved to purchase a parking permit that will be valid in an assigned lot location which may be up to a mile away from the assigned Residence Hall.  Any relevant change to the documented circumstances must be reported to TPS immediately, to determine whether or not the parking exception will be continued or revoked.

Granted exceptions are subject to audit, and residents may be required to provide additional  documentation to support continuance of the approved exception.

Compliance & Enforcement

Resident students are expected to adhere to the policy and not bring vehicles to campus. UCSB works with its neighbors to minimize street parking and traffic. Residential students play a vital role in maintaining this commitment and respecting the surrounding community.
